Columbia World Project's Social Impact Projects are a core activity in advancing Columbia University’s mission to leverage its resources to address pressing global challenges. The projects are competitive awards that enable Columbia faculty, researchers, and students to co-create research and practice solutions with external partners.
The projects address a wide range of issues, from climate resilience and migration to energy transitions and pandemic response. They vary in length, geography, team composition, partnership structure, and in scope, ranging from smaller early-stage project development, to field-testing interventions, to scaling proven solutions.
CWP Project Management
The CWP Project Management Team offers strategic and operational support to social impact projects, assisting project teams in identifying potential collaborators, refining plans and activities, navigating challenges, and exploring pathways for project sustainability and scalability.
CWP serves as a platform for the University to translate research into action. By providing structured project management and supporting coordination across partners and schools, CWP reduces the operational burden on academic teams while supporting rigorous, responsible implementation in complex contexts.
Measuring Success
CWP recently conducted an external evaluation to examine the outcomes, processes, and sustainability prospects of CWP social impact projects launched between 2017-2024. The study assessed how CWP's model translates academic research and knowledge into tangible social change. The evaluation affirms CWP’s role as a pioneering model for translating university-based research into social impact.
