Lingyun Matthew He
Matthew is a rising junior at Columbia College who competes for the NCAA Varsity Fencing Team, majoring in both Economics-Political Science and Mathematics-Statistics, and minoring in Philosophy. As a low-income Chinese American from the suburban Midwest, he is constantly trying to tackle problems both systemic and particular, rooted in the strong belief that these axes form the plane wherein most modern social issues rest. A lifetime advocate for focusing on one’s community, Matthew’s passion for both the overarching and the individual finds expression in his work through governance and direct impact, currently focused on representing Columbia Athletes through SAAC and assisting asylum seekers at a pro-se legal clinic in Harlem. Through the Social Impact Fellowship, Matthew aims to widen his perspective and engage in challenging conversations, develop effective ways to deepen and scale impact, and recast his understanding of what is possible through social impact work.
