Alexis Baltazar
Alexis is a rising senior in the School of General Studies studying Linguistics and Philosophy. Her current focus is on the subfields of cognitive and sociolinguistics. Alexis' upbringing in the bilingual border city of El Paso ignited a fascination with the power that language diversity and language policy have to shape a community. In the face of renewed attacks on certain racial and ethnic groups, Alexis is interested in initiatives that preserve linguistic diversity and promote linguistic equality. She currently volunteers teaching English as a second language in the New York community. As a Social Impact Fellow, Alexis hopes to take a cognitive linguistics approach to making learning English more approachable while simultaneously encouraging pride in and preservation of learners’ native tongues. She also aims to combat discrimination through educational campaigns on the role of language in discriminatory attitudes.
