Nihar Johari
Nihar Johari is an Urban and Infrastructure planner with professional experience of 12+ years in Infrastructure Planning, Social Sector and Climate change with Central and State Government in India. He had been closely working with the local government and academia in Housing, Transport, Water and Sanitation Infrastructure. As a Technical Expert and Consultant at SPARC for more than 7 years, Nihar has played a pivotal role in various projects under the mentorship of Sheela.
Nihar's domain expertise spans a diverse range of projects aimed at addressing pressing issues in urban development and climate resilience. One of his notable involvements with SPARC is Technical Lead for the "Roof Over Our Head Campaign," funded by the Global Resilience Partnership (GRP) and USAID. Nihar has actively engaged in research to explore resilient alternatives, fundraising efforts, and building partnerships with organizations sharing similar goals.
Beyond his impactful contributions in India, Nihar Johari has made significant international strides. Collaborating with BRAC in Bangladesh, he played a crucial role in the "Locally Led Adaptation Plan in Migrant-Friendly Towns," advising on policy interventions and analysing climate change impacts, leading to the creation of local-level adaptation plans. Nihar's dedication to climate adaptation is evident in projects like "Voices for Climate Adaptation" in Indonesia, addressing infrastructure deficits in Jakarta and Jogjakarta's informal settlements. His involvement in the Mukuru Spatial Planning Area in Nairobi showcases his commitment to inclusive development through community participation in master plan formulation. Nihar's academic contributions include "Building Resilience in Urban Communities (BReUCom)," integrating climate change and urban resilience into university curricula, along with practical applications like "Hotspot Mapping in Dharavi, Mumbai," addressing specific infrastructure challenges.
In 2020, he established Design for Change Consultancy Private Limited (DCCPL), a firm that delivers services across diverse sectors globally. DCCPL operates in the domains of Social Development, Infrastructure, and Climate Change, collaborating with various organizations on Urban and Infrastructure Planning, Rural Development, Participatory Research and Planning, and Sustainable Development. Currently, DCCPL is engaged in several key projects, including the Master Plans for the towns of Bettiah, Bagaha, and Siwan in Bihar under the AMRUT 2.0 initiative, as well as providing technical support for the development of Women’s Adaptation Labs in Africa and Asia, funded by the Global Centre for Adaptation.
