Ajmal Sabawoon
Dr. Ajmal Sabawoon is a physician in background and an accomplished academic in the field of public health. As a multidisciplinary academic researcher, professor, mentor and leader, he is involved in different studies in the post conflict setting. He laid the groundwork to establish the integrated biological and behavioral surveillance and monitoring and evaluation framework for the national AIDS control Program in Afghanistan.
He had a key role in the development of the faculty of public health in the Kabul University of Medical Sciences and institutionalized the research behavior at the University. He initiated the design of the first ever national mental health survey in Afghanistan that was successfully completed in 2018. He has implemented different studies in Afghanistan and contributed to inform policies. He also developed teaching materials for epidemiology, biostatistics and research for students. Currently he focuses on evaluating the mental health and psychosocial needs of Afghans recently resettled in the United States and adverse childhood experiences at critical periods of development and resulting stress, trauma and mental health among children in Afghanistan: 2017 and 2024.
