On September 20, NBC showcased work underway in Guatemala as part of our first project, ACToday.
In a detailed article and in the lead story on Chris Hayes’s “All In,” reporter Jacob Soboroff described how climate change and weather variability are increasing food insecurity and driving migration from Guatemala to the United States.
The story featured Diego Pons, an applied climatologist at the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI), which leads ACToday, as he outlined the problem, and took Soboroff around the country to demonstrate the climate’s effects on Guatemalans, especially those who grow food.
“Our research suggests that the main driver of the recent migration in Guatemala is increasing socio-economic vulnerability,” Pons told NBC.
Last week, Columbia’s national meteorological serviced announced the launch of NextGen, a weather forecasting system that is supported by ACToday. The program aims to mitigate the effects of climate change on Guatemalans.
