Echoes of Attica: Gospel, Rap, Music, Theater
ECHOES OF ATTICA, A MUSIC/THEATER PIECE ABOUT THE 1971 ATTICA PRISON REVOLT, WILL BE PERFORMED BY FORMERLY INCARCERATED ACTORS AND MUSICIANS, TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT ITS RELEVANCE TO THE CURRENT OUTBREAK OF STATE VIOLENCE AGAINST COMMUNITIES OF COLOR.
In collaboration with Exodus and faculty from the English Department, Echoes of Attica was written by Ron Jenkins, a professor at Wesleyan who has worked with incarcerated people to stage performances at correctional facilities. He partners with people when they are released to put on plays like Echoes of Attica. The play will be introduced by an octogenarian survivor of the Attica massacre and the play will be recorded on video for educational non-profit purposes.
