Event details
On February 5, 2020, scholars K. Sabeel Rahman, Associate Professor of Law at Brooklyn Law School and Hollie Russon Gilman, Fellow at Columbia World Projects, will celebrate the launch of their new book, Civic Power: Rebuilding American Democracy in an Era of Crisis.
The book argues for a bold revival of our democracy by engaging grassroots communities and dismantling the structures that concentrate wealth and power in the hands of the few. Through analysis of historical and contemporary case studies of political movements throughout the U.S., Rahman and Russon Gilman advocate for democratic reform bold enough to counter the challenges of corruption, systemic exclusion, and deliberate de-democratization. By highlighting novel approaches to policy-making, civic technology and public space, they share their vision for a more inclusive, responsive government and an empowered civil society.
The book launch reception will bring together government officials, grassroots organizers, and academics at the Forum at Columbia University. The authors will conclude their talk with a question and answer session moderated by Ester Fuchs, Columbia University Professor of International and Public Affairs and Political Science and Director of the Urban and Social Policy Program. The authors will respond to questions and discuss how lessons from the book illuminate pathways forward to enhance the power of citizens and create a stronger and more inclusive democracy.
