The Columbia World Projects Research and Engagement team mobilizes scholars and practitioners to confront challenges that no single discipline or approach could successfully address. University expertise is fragmented across schools, disciplines, and departments and insufficiently connected to the work of practitioners and policymakers. We work to overcome these divisions.
The team creates durable networks that draw together university faculty and professionals from business, civil society, foundations, government, and other universities to confront problems that no single entity could successfully address. These networks allow for the exchange of novel ideas and findings, help shape consensus around key issues, amplify the impact of those involved, and develop pathways to policy uptake and thoughtful implementation.
The research and engagement team currently works on topic areas of global consequence: the renewal of fraying democratic systems and opportunities to advance urban inclusion.
Research initiatives and working groups undertake field-building by turning cross-disciplinary solutions into action by issuing reports, developing learning materials, hosting public events and high-level discussions, assembling communities of practice, and building partnerships that drive change.
