Columbia World Projects (CWP) today welcomed its inaugural student cohort of the Social Impact Fellowship. The eight selected rising junior and senior undergraduate students from Columbia College, the School of General Studies and Barnard College will spend the summer in residence at CWP, followed by engagement with CWP programming during the coming academic year.
This is the first program to be launched by CWP as part of its Fourth Purpose Academy, a series of education and training opportunities for students and faculty to help realize what University President Lee C. Bollinger calls the university’s “Fourth Purpose” – advancing human welfare and confronting the great challenges of our time.
The six-week Summer Intensive will deepen the fellows’ knowledge and build new skills and capacities as they confront complex global challenges. During the 2022-2023 academic year, students will remain engaged with CWP, receiving mentorship, participating in hands-on learning opportunities at CWP, and meeting thought leaders and social impact innovators, including participants in the Columbia University Obama Foundation Scholars Program. The Social Impact Fellowship will be offered annually for emerging undergraduate leaders. A graduate student cohort is expected to launch in the fall of 2022.
“We are thrilled to welcome our inaugural cohort of Social Impact Fellows who come to the program with an impressive drive to confront the great challenges of our time,” said Columbia World Projects’ Director, Wafaa El-Sadr. “Their experiences this summer paired with mentorship and hands-on learning opportunities throughout the year will further embolden the ability of these young leaders to create meaningful change in their future careers.”
